Help 4 Heros Climbing Event 20th March 2010
What an awesome event this turned out to be. We raised at least £300 with sponsorship money still to come in. What has been really special though was that Mr and Mrs Hatton were really touched and emotional by what everyone was doing and comforted by the strength of the support.
30 gym members and several spectators turned up to support and climb the height of Kilimanjaro in a day! What was amazing was the fact that many of the participants had never done anything like this before and were even petrified of heights. Each ascent up the wall showed courage, determination, strength and endurance. It was amazing to see people grow in confidence from almost bottling out to ascending the wall several times. Every single person was brilliant and every single ascent was a triumph. Well done to everyone, you should be really proud of your achievement because we are.
To name a few individual triumphs:
Mary with 4 hip replacements managed 3 ascents, Christine Warren was overcome by the height 3 times and had to be lowered off but she eventually managed 3 full ascents, Gill Brogan said she wasn’t going to do it for weeks and then eventually did 10, Alex Holder completed 35 ascents, Steve Wharram and his buddy Olli completed 57 between them and a young man Joe from the university who joined in did at least 70 and was still going when we had completed……. absolutely brilliant.
The event could not have happened without York climbers so a big thank you must go to Stuart Holmes and all those that turned up to belay. If anyone has got the bug after the event and would like to do more they should visit the website: www.yorkclimbers.ning.com

out which ended with a meal in an Italian restaurant.
If you would like to join the support team, a ticket and
Samson T shirt will be £20. Please order and pay by
the 30th April if you would like to attend.
A mini bus could be available at an extra cost of £6.
Please let Jo know if you would like this option to be
available.
