Paul’s Diary
NABBA Mr / Miss North East 2010
Bodybuilding is a sport that requires so many physical and mental skills, the key to being successful in the sport is staying focused and making sure every element is carried out to greatest of precision. All that said I have never been so proud as to see so many athletes from our club not only maintaining a positive attitude but putting on a great show and representing the club so well.
As said by the head judge on the day, “I’ve never seen the competition to such a high standard”. Kicking off the start of the day was Scott (jr category) and Dan ( under 18) , what a line up in both rounds, the standard was high and our boys did us all proud, after struggling with his prep Scott got on stage and showed himself off well. Dan was amazing he fought his way into 2nd place and puts himself in a great position gaining an invite to the novice Britain’s later in the year.
The Novice round myself and Paul Brown saw a line up like no other, 16 men all hungry for a top spot, it was simply the highest standard line up I’ve ever been apart off.
All in all it was a great day and I’m hungry to get back on stage and nail my conditioning in the Mr UK show on 23rd of October. I’d like to thank everyone who came and supported us on the day and I personally would like to say thank you to Jo and my beautiful girlfriend Katie for all there help and support, if it wasn’t for their support and encouragement I know I wouldn’t be able to get on stage and represent Samson and Delilah’s.
Here’s some pics from the day…

During the final few weeks training for the NABBA competition on May 15th, Paul is following training tips and diet advice from Shaun “Dino” Davis, Pro Mr. Universe and I.F.B.B. pro bodybuilder.
Take a look at www.dinosaurnutrition.com to see what he’s up to.

Under 7 weeks to go…

We are coming up to 8 weeks to go, like all the best diets mine has been progressing slowly. In bodybuilding terms it’s been getting cleaner which just means cutting down on simple sugars (like fruits, sweets, cakes etc) and excess fats (pastry, sauces etc).
Things are coming together well, my body feels tighter which is great for the competition but it makes sleeping and general moving around difficult, I’m the biggest and heaviest I’ve ever been and it sure does take it out of you just moving. Sleep is difficult I’ve noticed but the main thing is I’m feeling healthy and well.
The hardest thing about being a competitive bodybuilder is everyone around me supports me to help me get where I ultimately want to be and I want to make them proud by winning – so this comp is important.
I always notice when coming up to a show all my clients ask me what the secret to getting in shape is, if I could give you 3 tips they would be:
- Have a vision: ” know what it is you want, if its inch loss or fat reduction, if you don’t have a goal how do you know if you’ve scored?”
- You make the difference: “You have to stay positive and don’t let negative talk get in your head, you don’t have to compete to have a goal”
- Don’t make the same mistake twice: “So many people try diet or get into shape and don’t get what they want, if you’re struggling why not speak to a pro who can steer you on the right lines, so why not come for a session and see if how much difference it can make”
Happy training , Paul

Well we have gone past the 10 week mark…
I think all of us preparing for the competition have had our fair share of ups and downs but none the less we are all focused and driven. I think for Dan there is a unique pressure as this will be his debut and like all of us we all expect to bring our best on stage.

Paul Brown (above) who has not competed for a couple of years has stepped up to the novice category and coupled with that he maintains a busy work life and a family life – to top all that off he instructs martial arts……..not too much on then hey!
As for me I’m staying focused – always being driven to get that perfect day of eating in, training and sleep….it’s so lucky I have no social life and am content to live my life in the gym. My approach to training and diet has shifted a great deal since last year and I have seen improvements, as all athletes I am still frustrated that I don’t get it spot on everyday…….but that is one of the things that keeps me driven
As for everyone else it’s such a shame that I can’t give them an award for putting up with my mood swings…….constant attention seeking and need for reassurance…….I’d like to thank everyone that has helped support us and whatever happens on the day we wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for all of you guys helping us.
As for my training and diet split I will aim to give you a week by week update from week 8……for me that’s when it gets interesting, train hard and win easy.
Paul.
Heres a pic of Dan White being overly enthusiastic…

Well I’m two weeks into my diet and revised training programme.
The last time I dieted was for a NATURAL BODYBUILDING competition were I was placed 2nd in the heavy weight class. Although the result was good I felt I got too many things wrong with my diet and I underestimated the opposition.
With my preparations this year I have focused allot on the weaker points of my body. Bodybuilding isn’t about being the biggest man on stage or being the leanest, it is about the total package! You have to have great size and shape to your muscles, as well as being balanced and lean…on top of this you have to show every muscle off in detail in a performance. Hopefully I will make a difference by focusing on the weaker areas of my body.
With my diet I have staged it in 3 weekly cycles. I am dieting for 12 weeks and currently in week 10. I am staying NATURAL so it’s very important that I look at every element of my preparation and get everything super tight so my muscles will be as lean and tight as possible.
Currently my training consists of 15 mins cardio training in the morning followed by a smaller muscle group eg calves or forearms in the afternoon. After training I then take a protein shake and a high carb meal. In all my sessions I am reducing the weights and using simple movements allowing me to move more slowly and focus on the full movement range. This ensures that the muscle is under tension for longer and it gets really pumped. Overall my shape is getting tighter and have allot more energy. I have cut out al sugars and coffee from my diet.
